Objective

Future-proofing Australia's biosecurity

To develop large scale, science-based innovations that are achievable and have the potential to improve long-term biosecurity outcomes for Australia.

Increased incursions

Pests, weeds and diseases currently cost Australia $25 billion a year. An Australian outbreak of foot and mouth disease would be catastrophic, potentially costing the economy $50 billion in lost exports and eradication efforts. Lantana is a noxious weed that has spread over more than 1600 kilometres of eastern Australian coastline. It is estimated that graziers spend $17.1 million a year on lantana control and lose more than $104 million in production due to lantana invasion.

In a globally connected world, Australia is at constant risk from pests, weeds and diseases. Major incursions are associated with international trade and outbreaks experienced in other countries highlight the impact on agriculture, people movement and business activities.

The opportunity

Protecting our environment, our agriculture and communities is fundamental to the health of all Australians.

Threats to biosecurity are already being felt with future risks having the ability to damage our way of life. We will collaborate and invest to accelerate science and technology outcomes in biosecurity.

Together with government, industry, universities, community and indigenous partners, we will aim to take biosecurity R&D from a transactional business to a scaled series of co-developed multidisciplinary, multi-party projects focussed on transformational technology-led systems and solutions.

This innovation will support, develop and drive national and regional partnerships, science innovation and industry driven investment in technology.

Impact

Accelerated innovation and investment in Biosecurity has the potential to protect and enhance Australia's economic, agricultural and environmental interests, including:

  • $78 billion agricultural sector
  • 1.6 million Australian jobs across the agriculture supply chain
  • $6.5 trillion in environmental assets
  • $42 billion in inbound tourism.
