The challenge
Understanding onshore gas in an Australian setting
Australia has vast resources of onshore gas including coal seam gas, shale gas and tight gas. The gas is found in complex geological systems and is normally difficult to produce, requiring innovative technological solutions for extraction. Accessing these reserves will provide Australia with large quantities of gas to meet domestic needs and for export. However, this access requires use of world's best practice safety, engineering and environmental standards to ensure impacts are minimised.
Our response
Delivering solutions for industry
Our research is aimed at improving understanding of Australia's onshore gas resources and developing sound and proven technologies to ensure these resources are developed efficiently, and in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
We are doing research to help ensure that the techniques used by Australia's natural gas industry are world's best practice and aiming to generate an ongoing and profitable onshore gas industry.
We are also partnering with industry through the Gas Industry Social & Environmental Research Alliance (GISERA) to research environmental, social and economic impacts that onshore gas development may have on communities. The projects and research findings are independently verified and transparently available to everyone on the GISERA website[Link will open in a new window].
These research findings are helping industry, government and communities make informed decisions about onshore gas developments and manage their effects on society, the economy and the environment.
