Goal
Partnering to develop transition pathways to embed low-emission technology into Australian industry and agriculture, supporting regional communities in a low emissions future.
The Towards Net Zero mission aims to create new growth industries and jobs for Australia and ensure the ongoing global competitiveness of Australian resources, agriculture and regional communities.A low carbon future
Around the world, governments, businesses and communities are increasing their efforts to reach net zero emissions.
A combination of existing and novel technologies, and the means to rapidly embed them into practice, is necessary to accelerate our net zero goals.
Opportunity
A net zero Australia
Australian businesses, together with state and local governments, are setting net zero goals and the Australian Government has confirmed it is seeking to get to net zero preferably by 2050.
We know it will be essential to not just develop new technology to meet these goals, but to also address barriers to deployment of that technology.
Australian businesses need practical tools to remain globally competitive as an increasing number of trading partners and international supply chains decarbonise.
Achieving this will require the demonstration of technology at scale to drive wider adoption.
Developing and demonstrating effective, high abatement potential technology with industry and regional partners will equip Australia to reduce its emissions while capitalising on our many natural advantages to export technology, low carbon products, carbon offsets and help our trading partners to reduce global emissions.
Potential impact
Sustainable agriculture, a low emissions resource industry, prosperous regions
To make sure technology solutions meet the needs of Australian producers and communities, we are establishing the Towards Net Zero Mission to work with partners to establish net zero regional demonstrators or ‘living labs’ within Australia.
New transformative technologies can be demonstrated in action to drive the adoption and cost reductions needed to support the sustainable growth of Australian businesses and communities in a low carbon future.
Proposed focus
Creating a transition plan towards net zero
We will provide Australian industry, agriculture and regional communities with the tools to achieve net zero emissions and realise the opportunities of a low carbon economy. The developing mission will focus on four areas to enable Net Zero Emissions goals of industry, governments and communities around Australia:
- Science-based frameworks for achieving Net Zero Emissions
- Standardised assessment techniques including digital carbon monitoring systems
- New high-abatement potential technologies for industry and agriculture
- Growth, high value jobs and transition pathways
Collaborations
Success depends on strong collaboration across industry, research, communities, and governments to build the national skills and readiness to transition to a low emissions future.
We are linking external partners with CSIRO's Mineral Resources, Energy, Agriculture and Food, Land and Water, Oceans and Atmosphere, Manufacturing and Data61 business units to develop cohesive, cross-industry solutions that are ready for community and industry adoption.
Our vision of regional transformation will only be achieved through a coherent, collaborative network spanning the Australian innovation ecosystem. Tools and technologies need to be co-designed to meet community and industry requirements.
We are seeking additional partners to help us reach our goal of creating the innovation networks to build prosperous regions and industry.
